Kyleigh Simpson & Michael Simpson, Over the Fence and Overlooked: traditional plants in Queensland’ss g ritage,  gardening heritage, (CopyRight Publishing, (Brisbane),2009 (ISBN 978 1876344 66 5): hardback RRP $49.50

(available from shambles@bigpond.net.au or 85 Western Avenue, Montville, Queensland 4560: price includes

This book is an enthusiastic if unstructured look at traditional Queensland gardens and especially their plants. The

sectional heading ‘Trees we have enjoyed, which blessed us with shade, and lent maturity to our garden’ perfectly

captures the book’s tone. Practical rather than theoretical, anecdotal rather than scholarly- these factors define its

approach and probable readership. The images include some evocative family photographs, directing our attention to the

use of such sources in tracing the history of Australia’s garden heritage.

Review from Peter Dallimore (copyright publishing website: see links)
In Over the Fence and Overlooked, Kyleigh & Michael have produced a very readable and informative book on

Queensland ‘s plant heritage. It is about resurrecting the gardens and plant species of the early part of the twentieth

century. The book puts the gardens and plants in context with the architecture and garden structures that harmonised with

each other and the climate. The many photographs included capture the beauty and charm of the structures and the

gardens surrounds. The book caters for the newcomer to gardening and the experienced gardener alike. The

combination of many beautiful photographs of gardens and individual flowers and the detailed descriptions of plants helps

the lay gardener to recognise species and their place in a garden. Michael’s penmanship captures the beauty of the old

buildings and their surrounds around Montville, Sandgate and Shorncliffe. The use of photographs and writings of family

history featuring gardens reinforce the heritage theme flowing throughout the book and highlight the important role gardens have played in people’s lives over the generations. The book fills a gap in gardening information and makes a strong case for

using species from the past to all interested in creating and maintaining a beautiful garden. It is a very worthwhile addition

to any gardener’s library.

Review from Margaret Monaghan (copyright publishing website: see links)
This book does as it says - not a gardening book but one which shows which plants grow in our warm climate and

compliment the areas which it covers. A delightful read and very informative.

"I love combining my interest in story making with the use of collage illustrations. My books are designed for early readers. The use of many simple materials in collage, for example fabrics, feathers and paper I hope will inspire young readers to make colourful pictures to illustrate their own stories"

Kyleigh Simpson

"Our garden, 'The Shambles' is our gift to each other and we can't help letting our enthusiasm about gardens in general from spilling onto the pages of a few books. The mad idea of also having a website www.montvillegarden.com and a "blog" (or whatever), http://montvillegarden.blogspot.com, meant dabbling in gardening communication of a dodgy quality compared to the printed word, but we thought that we'd give it a go. What the heck!

After all, if you look at range of titles in the gardening section at any bookshop you would think that Australian gardens don't exist north of the Tweed River. Noticing this we proudly made the commercially suicidal decision to include the name of Queensland in the title of our book, "Over the Fence and Overlooked, Traditional Plants in Queensland's Gardening Heritage".

Our gardening DVD "A Garden in the Rain" we can safely claim to be unique as we can't find any DVD films available which do anything more than touch on any garden in Queensland.

There are more books on the way and in the words of the wonderful Victor Borge, we've "suffered for my art. Now it's your turn!".
